Nanjing

Nanjing is a city in China, significant as the location of Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum. Sun Yat-sen, founder of the Republic of China (Taiwan's formal name), is a symbol of the shared past between Taiwan and mainland China. Recently, Nanjing has gained renewed attention due to a visit by Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of Taiwan’s Kuomintang (KMT), the main opposition party. Cheng's visit to the mausoleum was part of a larger trip to mainland China, including meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Her visit, the first by a sitting KMT chairperson in a decade, is aimed at fostering peace and dialogue between Taiwan and China amid strained relations. Her actions are controversial, with critics accusing her of being too close to Beijing. Nanjing, therefore, serves as a symbolic location for cross-strait relations and a focal point in the ongoing discussions between Taiwan and China.
