Niamey is the capital city of Niger. Recent news reports indicate significant unrest near its international airport. Gunfire and explosions were reported on January 29, 2026, with videos showing flashes and burning vehicles. The airport is located next to Base Aérienne 101, a military base previously used by American and now Russian troops. Niger's military government, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, has accused France, Benin, and Ivory Coast of sponsoring an assault on the military base at the airport. Tiani also thanked “Russian partners” for repelling the attack. The cause of the violence and any casualties are yet to be confirmed by authorities.
