Nord Department

Nord is a department located in northern Haiti. It is the location of the Citadelle Laferrière, also known as Citadelle Henry, a large 19th-century mountaintop fortress and UNESCO World Heritage site that is a popular tourist destination. Nord is currently newsworthy due to a deadly crush that occurred at the Citadelle Laferrière during an annual Easter gathering. Initial reports indicate at least 30 people have died, with dozens more injured. Jean Henri Petit, the head of civil protection for the Nord department, confirmed the incident. The Prime Minister of Haiti, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, has also commented on the tragedy.
