North Darfur

North Darfur, specifically its capital El Fasher, is at the center of a humanitarian crisis in Sudan due to the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). El Fasher, once the last functioning hospital, has been under siege by the RSF, leading to mass killings, sexual violence, and targeted attacks against civilians. A UN-mandated fact-finding mission found the RSF's actions in El Fasher bore "hallmarks of genocide." The RSF is also accused of attempting to cover up atrocities through mass burials and the burning/removal of human remains. Amnesty International has called for war crimes investigations into RSF attacks, including one on the Zamzam refugee camp in North Darfur. The UN human rights chief has decried a "preventable human rights catastrophe" in El Fasher, highlighting the urgent need for investigations and accountability for the alleged war crimes.
