North Kivu

North Kivu is newsworthy due to a recent surge in conflict and a devastating mine collapse. A major coltan mine in Rubaya experienced a landslide earlier this week, resulting in at least 200 fatalities. This incident has raised concerns about the dangerous working conditions prevalent in the region's mines, which supply a significant portion of the world's coltan. Furthermore, the M23 rebel group remains a significant threat. A year after seizing Goma, the capital of North Kivu, the group continues to control territory and disrupt daily life. Recently, M23 seized Uvira, expanding its control to both North and South Kivu. The ongoing conflict and instability in North Kivu have significant implications for the DRC's economy, regional security, and the global supply chain of essential minerals.
