Oaxaca

Oaxaca is a state located in southern Mexico, known historically as the birthplace of Benito Juárez, Mexico's first indigenous president. Juárez, born in a remote Zapotec village in Oaxaca, is considered a key figure in the modernization of Mexico. Currently, Oaxaca is newsworthy due to a recent tragic train derailment. On Sunday, December 28, 2025, a passenger train on the Interoceanic Train route linking Oaxaca and Veracruz derailed near the town of Nizanda. The accident resulted in at least 13 fatalities and 98 injuries among the 250 passengers and crew members on board. The train was traveling on a cross-country route connecting the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico. The incident highlights the challenges and risks associated with transportation infrastructure in the region.
