Ostdeutschland

Ostdeutschland, or East Germany, refers to the states that formerly constituted the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Thirty-five years after reunification, Ostdeutschland remains a focus of attention, evidenced by the continued need for a federal commissioner (Ostbeauftragte) dedicated to addressing the region's specific concerns. The rise of the AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) in Ostdeutschland is particularly noteworthy. The party is aiming for an absolute majority in Saxony-Anhalt. While the AfD is gaining traction in Western Germany as well, its strength in the East raises concerns about political polarization and the need to address the anxieties of the population.
