Pinglu Canal

The Pinglu Canal is a nearly completed, approximately $10 billion infrastructure project in China designed to enhance trade connections between the country's southwestern provinces and Southeast Asia. News surrounding the canal is currently focused on its imminent completion, expected before the end of the year, after a four-year construction period. This mega-project aims to provide landlocked regions of China with direct access to global shipping lanes, thereby reducing transportation time and costs. The canal's significance lies in its potential to strengthen China's economic ties with Southeast Asia, its top export destination, and to integrate its inland provinces more effectively into global trade networks. There is also consideration of an even larger project, the Xianggui Canal, to extend the Pinglu Canal's reach further inland.
