República Árabe Saharaui Democrática (RASD)

The República Árabe Saharaui Democrática (RASD), or Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, is a partially recognized state claiming sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara. Established in 1976 by the Polisario Front, a Sahrawi liberation movement, it seeks independence from Morocco, which controls most of the territory. The RASD operates primarily from refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria. The 50th anniversary of the RASD is a focal point, with Brahim Ghali, a founder of the Polisario Front, extending an olive branch to Morocco, emphasizing the Sahrawi people's desire for peace and partnership rather than being a source of threat. However, the ongoing conflict and the perceived abandonment by Spain, the former colonial power, remain significant issues. The denial of visas to Sahrawi individuals, like Zeinabu Dah, despite their connection to Spanish-funded aid programs, highlights the complex relationship and the challenges faced by the Sahrawi people.
