Safi

Safi is a coastal city and port in Morocco, located on the Atlantic coast. In December 2025, Safi became the center of a national emergency due to severe flash floods triggered by torrential rains. These floods resulted in the deaths of at least 37 people, making it the deadliest such disaster in Morocco in at least a decade. The sudden and intense rainfall inundated homes, shops, and streets, particularly in the old city center, where at least 70 homes were flooded. Search and rescue operations were launched, and dozens of injured individuals received hospital treatment. The Moroccan government initiated a nationwide emergency relief operation to support the tens of thousands of families affected by the severe winter weather, including those in Safi. The event highlights Morocco's vulnerability to extreme weather events, particularly in drought-hit regions prone to flash flooding.
