Sagaing

Sagaing, a region within Myanmar, is currently newsworthy due to the convergence of several crises. The region, already deeply affected by ongoing civil war, was struck by a severe earthquake on March 28, 2025. One year later, the situation remains dire, with shortages of food, medicine, and fuel exacerbated by the Iran war. The earthquake compounded the trauma inflicted by the civil conflict. Adding to the instability, Myanmar's military junta is holding general elections in phases, with the second phase occurring in January 2026. These elections are controversial, with allegations that they are designed to legitimize military rule amidst the ongoing civil war. Sagaing, like other regions in Myanmar, is therefore experiencing a complex humanitarian and political crisis, highlighting the country's deep instability and the suffering of its population.
