San José del Palmar

San José del Palmar is a municipality located in the Chocó province of Colombia. It was significantly impacted by a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the region on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. This seismic event, one of the largest in years for Colombia, occurred at a depth of 103 km and was felt across a vast area. The earthquake has resulted in a tragic loss of life, with at least 132 people confirmed dead and the number expected to rise as rescue efforts continue. More than 3,000 individuals are reported missing, with many feared trapped beneath collapsed buildings. In response to the disaster, a state of emergency has been declared. The United States administration has provided $15.5 million in relief aid to support the recovery efforts in the affected areas, including San José del Palmar.
