Sikkim

Sikkim, a state in northeastern India, is currently in the news due to a tragic tunnel blast at a hydroelectric project on the Teesta River. The incident, believed to be caused by a gas leak, resulted in the deaths of 10 workers and left at least 15 trapped. This hydroelectric project is being developed by the state-owned National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) in the village of Samardung. Separately, the Teesta River, which flows through Sikkim and into Bangladesh, is a source of ongoing concern for the latter country. Bangladesh is experiencing significant water scarcity during dry seasons due to the river's shrinking levels, impacting millions of livelihoods. Historically, Dhaka has sought India's assistance for Teesta River restoration projects. However, recent reports indicate that Bangladesh has turned to China for aid in addressing these water issues, highlighting the complex geopolitical dynamics surrounding shared water resources in the region.
