Staten Island

Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of New York City. It is currently newsworthy due to two distinct issues: redistricting and the detention of a resident in Venezuela. Regarding redistricting, the Supreme Court sided with Republicans, halting a state court ruling that would have redrawn the boundaries of New York's 11th congressional district, the only GOP-held district in NYC, for the 2026 elections. This decision reversed a previous ruling that deemed the district unfair to Black and Hispanic residents. Conversely, another state judge ruled that New York must redraw its congressional map before the upcoming midterm elections, presenting Democrats with an opportunity to gain a House seat. Separately, James Luckey-Lange, a Staten Island resident, was reported missing in Venezuela in December 2025 and has since been found to be held in a Venezuelan counterintelligence detention center. These events highlight Staten Island's involvement in national political debates and international incidents.
