About
Uvira is a strategic city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that has been under control of M23 rebels backed by Rwanda since December 2025. The conflict began as part of the larger peace process between DRC and Rwanda, but escalated into violence after US President Donald Trump signed a peace deal with both countries. Over 200,000 people have fled Uvira due to fighting, and thousands more have crossed the border into Burundi. The UNHCR reports that women and children arriving from Uvira are 'exhausted and severely traumatised'. The US has condemned Rwanda's actions as a 'clear violation' of the peace deal, and international mediators are working to facilitate the withdrawal of M23 fighters from the city.
