Varadero, a popular tourist destination in Cuba, is currently facing significant disruptions to air travel due to a severe shortage of aviation fuel. This shortage is reportedly a consequence of a US-imposed oil blockade impacting the island nation. As a result, both Russian and Canadian airlines have announced suspensions of flights to Cuba. Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency cited difficulties in refueling aircraft as the primary reason, leading to the temporary suspension of flights by Rossiya and Nordwind airlines and the evacuation of Russian tourists. Air Canada has also suspended service, citing advisories regarding the unreliability of fuel supply at Cuban airports. The airline is operating empty flights to retrieve approximately 3,000 customers currently stranded in Cuba. This situation highlights the vulnerability of Cuba's tourism sector to external political and economic pressures and the potential impact on international travelers.
