Villa Baviera

Villa Baviera, previously known as Colonia Dignidad, is a small Chilean settlement founded in 1961 by Paul Schäfer, a former Nazi. The compound, characterized by its German-style architecture, served as a cult-like community where Schäfer exerted absolute control, engaging in torture, sexual abuse, and weapons smuggling. It also collaborated with the Pinochet regime, acting as a detention and torture center. The site is newsworthy because Chile's current right-wing government, led by President José Antonio Kast, has halted plans for a memorial at the former Colonia Dignidad site. This decision reverses previous efforts to acknowledge and commemorate the victims of the atrocities committed there. The planned expropriation of land for the memorial has been stopped.
