Wolf Volcano

Wolf Volcano is located on Floreana Island in the Galápagos archipelago. Floreana Island is experiencing a significant ecological restoration effort, making Wolf Volcano relevant due to its role as a habitat. The island's ecosystem was severely impacted by human activity, leading to the extinction of the Floreana giant tortoise (Chelonoidis niger niger) in the 1840s. These tortoises were vital to the island's ecosystem. Recently, 158 captive-bred juvenile tortoises were reintroduced to Floreana as part of the Floreana Ecological Restoration Project, marking their return after over 180 years. This reintroduction is a milestone for conservation, aiming to restore the island's ecological balance and re-establish the giant tortoise population within the volcanic landscape.
