The Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, is currently a significant focus due to rising security concerns and evolving geopolitical responsibilities. Its military counter-intelligence agency, MAD, has warned of increased espionage activities from Russia and China, with Germany being a prioritized target. Recent incidents include the spotting of drones over a Bundeswehr base housing Patriot air-defense systems, shortly after a bomb was found at Leipzig airport, highlighting potential security vulnerabilities. In response to global shifts and concerns about US security commitments, Germany is bolstering its defense capabilities. This includes a pledge to build Europe's strongest army and increased defense spending, aiming to reach 5% of GDP well before 2035. Furthermore, the Bundeswehr is deepening European nuclear cooperation by participating in a French-led nuclear exercise. Despite these efforts, recruitment challenges persist, with a voluntary drive yielding only 500 recruits so far this year, prompting discussions about potentially reintroducing mandatory conscription.
