Coal

Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock, formed as rock strata called coal seams. It is most commonly carboniferous rock, and is the largest source of energy for the generation of electricity worldwide, as well as a fuel of last resort. Recent geopolitical events, specifically the war impacting natural gas supplies, have led major Asian importers to turn back to coal. This shift is undermining the role of liquefied natural gas (L.N.G.) as a stable energy anchor in the region. Despite global efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources and warnings from organizations like the UN about the increasing urgency of climate change and the likelihood of record-breaking global temperatures, the immediate energy needs in Asia are driving a resurgence in coal consumption. This development highlights the complex and often conflicting pressures between energy security, economic stability, and climate action in the current global landscape.
