About
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is a regional political and economic union of fifteen countries located in West Africa. Established in 1975, its mission is to promote economic integration in all fields of activity of the constituent countries. ECOWAS is currently newsworthy due to significant challenges to its stability and influence. Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have announced their intention to leave the organization in 2025, forming the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). This follows military coups in these nations and strained relations with ECOWAS, particularly regarding sanctions and interventions. ECOWAS is also grappling with increasing cross-border violence and terrorism, leading to the activation of a regional standby force. Furthermore, several member states, including Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, are experiencing political instability with recent coups and upcoming elections, raising concerns about democratic backsliding and the organization's ability to uphold its principles of good governance. Benin also experienced a failed coup attempt, highlighting the fragility of democracy in the region.
