FAW

FAW (First Automobile Works) is a Chinese commercial truck manufacturer. The company gained prominence in South Africa after entrepreneur Richard Leiter introduced their Jiefang CA141 truck in 1994. Leiter's initial gamble on the then-unknown brand proved successful, leading to the establishment of a large assembly plant in the Coega special economic zone. This expansion transformed Leiter from an importer to an industrialist, and FAW now outsells major competitors in the South African market. While FAW's South African success is highlighted, another Chinese EV maker, Nio, is also in the news. Nio is investing heavily in battery swapping technology, planning to add 1,000 stations to its existing network. Although Nio and FAW operate in different sectors (EVs vs. commercial trucks), both exemplify the growing influence and innovation of Chinese automotive companies on the global stage.
