Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is a federal law enforcement agency within the Department of Homeland Security. Recent news highlights their involvement in various controversial incidents. HSI officers were deployed to airports during a partial government shutdown, reportedly at the direction of then-President Trump. The agency faced scrutiny after a HSI agent fatally shot a U.S. citizen, Ruben Ray Martinez, during a traffic stop in Texas in March 2025; a grand jury declined to indict the agent. This shooting, along with others, was not initially disclosed by DHS. Additionally, a federal immigration supervisor was charged with harboring an undocumented person, allegedly his niece.
