The Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency, also known as BASARNAS, is the primary government body responsible for search and rescue operations throughout Indonesia. Its mandate covers a wide range of emergencies, including natural disasters and maritime accidents, given the archipelagic nature of the country. BASARNAS has been in the news recently due to its involvement in significant maritime rescue operations. Specifically, the agency was actively engaged in evacuating passengers from a ferry that caught fire near Bali, en route to Lombok, carrying over 130 people. Another incident involved a passenger ship, the Mutiara Santosa 2, which experienced a blaze off Madura Island, resulting in fatalities and missing persons. These events highlight BASARNAS's crucial role in ensuring public safety at sea and its ongoing efforts to respond to critical incidents in Indonesian waters.
