About

The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) was established by the United Nations Security Council in November 1994 to prosecute individuals responsible for the Rwandan genocide and related crimes committed in 1994. Its primary mandate was to bring to justice those who planned, instigated, or carried out the genocide. The tribunal successfully convicted numerous high-ranking officials and perpetrators, contributing significantly to international criminal justice and the fight against impunity. Recently, former UN human rights chief and ICTR judge Navanethem Pillay was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Committee cited her instrumental role in ensuring war crimes and genocide are prosecuted, highlighting her work at the ICTR and her broader efforts to promote peace and international law. This recognition underscores the enduring significance of the ICTR's legacy in holding perpetrators accountable for mass atrocities and promoting justice in the aftermath of conflict.
