Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP)

Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) is a jihadist group operating primarily in northeastern Nigeria and the Lake Chad region. It emerged as a splinter faction of Boko Haram, pledging allegiance to the Islamic State. ISWAP is newsworthy due to its alleged involvement in a recent surge of abductions in northwestern and central Nigeria, as claimed by the Nigerian government. However, this attribution is disputed by analysts who suggest criminal gangs, locally known as "bandits", are responsible. Furthermore, ISWAP is suspected of carrying out deadly bomb attacks in Maiduguri, a major city in northeastern Nigeria, resulting in numerous casualties.
