Kurdish Forces

Kurdish forces in Syria, often referred to as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and backed by the U.S., have been a key player in the fight against ISIS. They controlled significant territory in northeastern Syria, establishing a degree of autonomy. However, recent news highlights escalating tensions and conflict with the Syrian government. The Syrian army has been moving into Kurdish-held areas, dislodging Kurdish forces from territory they previously controlled, including key cities and dams. Fighting has broken out in Aleppo, leading to civilian evacuations. Simultaneously, there have been attempts at negotiation, with a ceasefire extended, albeit temporarily, to avert further conflict. The Syrian military has also accused Kurdish forces of allowing IS-linked detainees to escape from the al-Hol camp, which houses relatives of suspected ISIS members, after Kurdish forces withdrew and the Syrian army entered. The situation is significant due to its potential to destabilize the region, impact the fight against ISIS, and alter the balance of power in Syria.
