M23 rebels

The M23 (March 23 Movement) rebels are a militant group operating in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They are currently newsworthy due to a recent escalation of violence, including the capture of the strategic border town of Uvira and advancements further south along Lake Tanganyika. These actions have resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with nearly 90,000 refugees fleeing to Burundi and 200,000 internally displaced. The US has accused Rwanda of backing the M23 offensive, violating a recently brokered peace agreement. Despite a peace deal overseen by then-President Trump, the M23's advances continue, raising concerns about a potential regional conflict and the destabilization of the DRC's mineral-rich eastern region. The UN reports significant civilian casualties and injuries as a result of the escalating clashes.
