Meta Platforms, Inc. (Meta), the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is facing significant legal challenges regarding the addictive nature of its platforms and their impact on users, particularly children. Recent court cases have found Meta liable for designing its platforms to be addictive and for failing to adequately protect minors from harm, including sexual exploitation. A jury in Los Angeles ordered Meta and YouTube (Google) to pay $3 million in damages to a plaintiff who claimed addiction to their platforms led to mental health issues. In New Mexico, Meta was found guilty of endangering underage users. Furthermore, Meta was fined $375 million for failing to protect children from sexual exploitation. Meta intends to appeal some of these decisions.
