Organized Crime

Organized crime, particularly gangs, is a major concern in both South Africa and Guatemala. In South Africa, Police Minister Firoz Cachalia acknowledged the security forces' inability to defeat these deadly criminal gangs, highlighting the country's severe crime crisis and high homicide rate, fueled by gang violence and robberies. In Guatemala, gang-related uprisings in three prisons resulted in the deaths of nine police officers. These events present a significant challenge for President Bernardo Arévalo's administration, which is currently focused on combating corruption and organized crime. The simultaneous crises in both countries underscore the pervasive and destabilizing influence of organized crime on national security and governance, demonstrating the urgent need for effective strategies to address this complex issue.
