Red Eléctrica de España (REE), now known as Redeia, is the Spanish electricity transmission system operator (TSO). It is responsible for ensuring the security, reliability, and efficiency of the Spanish electricity system. REE is currently newsworthy due to ongoing investigations in the Spanish Senate regarding a significant power outage that affected the Iberian Peninsula on April 28, 2023. The president of Redeia, Beatriz Corredor, has appeared before the Senate commission to clarify potential inconsistencies in her previous statements and address discrepancies with testimonies from other experts. The Minister for Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, has also testified, emphasizing that the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC) will determine the responsibilities related to the outage. The investigation highlights the critical role of REE in maintaining grid stability and the political scrutiny surrounding its performance in preventing and managing large-scale power disruptions.
