Secretaría de Marina (Semar)

The Secretaría de Marina (Semar) is Mexico's naval authority, responsible for maritime security, search and rescue, and other naval operations. Semar is currently newsworthy due to its involvement in locating two missing sailboats carrying humanitarian aid to Cuba. These vessels, part of the 'Nuestra América' convoy, departed from Isla Mujeres in the Mexican Caribbean with nine crew members of various nationalities. After losing communication and failing to arrive in Havana as scheduled, Semar initiated a search and rescue operation. The vessels were eventually located by a Semar aircraft approximately 80 nautical miles northwest of Havana. This incident highlights Semar's role in maritime safety and its capacity to respond to emergencies in the Caribbean region, demonstrating its commitment to humanitarian efforts and regional cooperation.
