Tigray People’s Liberation Front

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is a rebel organization based in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. Historically, the TPLF was a dominant political force in Ethiopia for decades. Recently, the TPLF has become newsworthy due to renewed fighting in the region, specifically in western Tigray near Sheraro. These clashes, involving heavy artillery and drones, represent a significant threat to the fragile 2022 Pretoria peace deal signed between the Ethiopian federal government and the TPLF. The fighting has led to hundreds of Tigrayans, including wounded fighters, fleeing into Sudan. Both the Ethiopian federal army and the TPLF have traded blame for initiating these hostilities. The current relevance of the TPLF lies in its potential to destabilize the peace process and reignite a wider conflict, underscoring the ongoing fragility of security in northern Ethiopia.
