US Central Command (CENTCOM) is a unified combatant command of the U.S. Department of Defense, responsible for U.S. military operations in the Middle East, Central Asia, and parts of South Asia. CENTCOM is currently newsworthy due to heightened tensions and ongoing military actions in its area of responsibility. Recent events include reported US strikes on Iran's Kharg Island, a US refuelling plane crash in Iraq resulting in fatalities, and the use of US-made drones in attacks, mirroring technology used in the Ukraine-Russia war. CENTCOM has also conducted airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) targets in Syria as part of Operation Hawkeye Strike, retaliating for a previous attack on US forces.
