Zawiya refinery

The Zawiya refinery is Libya's largest functioning oil processing facility, situated approximately 40km west of Tripoli. It recently became newsworthy due to a temporary shutdown caused by fighting between armed groups in the vicinity. Operations were halted as a precautionary measure, leading to the evacuation of employees and the declaration of an emergency. This disruption, lasting about two days, underscored the refinery's vulnerability to local security issues. Following the cessation of hostilities, the refinery has since resumed its full operational capacity. The incident highlights the critical importance of the Zawiya refinery to Libya's oil sector and its susceptibility to regional instability, impacting national energy production and supply chains.
