Alfonso Basterra

Alfonso Basterra, born in Bilbao in 1964, is currently serving an 18-year prison sentence for the 2013 murder of his adopted daughter, Asunta Basterra Porto. He and his wife, Rosario Porto (now deceased), were both convicted of the crime after toxicological analysis revealed Asunta had been drugged. Basterra is incarcerated in the Topas prison in Salamanca. He is newsworthy because a judge recently granted him his first prison leave since his incarceration in 2013. This decision, however, is not final and is subject to appeal. The prosecution has already appealed the decision, effectively halting his release. The case remains significant due to the brutality of the crime and the public interest it generated at the time of the murder.
