Fabrice Leggeri

Fabrice Leggeri, formerly the director of Frontex (the European Border and Coast Guard Agency), and currently a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Rassemblement National (RN), is facing a formal investigation in France for alleged complicity in crimes against humanity. The investigation stems from complaints filed by organizations like the Ligue des Droits de l'Homme (LDH) and Utopia 56. These complaints accuse Leggeri of facilitating or covering up illegal pushbacks of migrant boats by Greek authorities towards Turkey, and interceptions by Libyan coast guards of migrant boats attempting to reach Italy, during his tenure at Frontex (2015-2022). A French investigating judge has been appointed to examine the accusations, marking the first time French justice will scrutinize the role of a former Frontex leader in the Mediterranean migration crisis. The investigation is significant due to its potential to hold individuals accountable for alleged human rights violations related to European border control policies.
