About

Fabrice Leggeri, a 57-year-old French politician, is currently a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the right-wing Rassemblement National (RN) party. Prior to his political career, he served as the Director of Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, from 2015 until his resignation. Leggeri is now the subject of a formal investigation in France concerning allegations of complicity in crimes against humanity and torture. The investigation stems from complaints filed by human rights organizations, including Ligue des Droits de l'Homme and Utopia 56. These organizations accuse Leggeri of actively facilitating or covering up illegal pushbacks of migrant boats by Greek authorities towards Turkey, as well as interceptions by Libyan coastguards of migrant boats attempting to reach Italy during his tenure at Frontex. The investigation marks the first time French justice will examine the role of a former Frontex leader in the Mediterranean migrant tragedy.
