Jacques Katutu

Jacques Katutu is the head of gorilla monitoring in Virunga National Park, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). He has worked as a ranger for 15 years, observing numerous gorilla births. Katutu is currently newsworthy due to the recent births of two sets of mountain gorilla twins within a short period (two months) in Virunga National Park. This is considered an extraordinary event because twin births are rare among mountain gorillas, an endangered species. Katutu was the first to observe the most recent set of twins, cradled by their mother, Mafuko. These births raise cautious hope for the conservation of mountain gorillas, especially given the park's location in a conflict zone.
