Jordi Sànchez

Jordi Sànchez is the former president of the Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC). He, along with Oriol Junqueras and Jordi Turull, sought a review by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) of its previous ruling concerning their pre-trial detention in Spain related to the 2017 Catalan independence referendum and subsequent events (the 'procés'). These individuals argued that their pre-trial detention violated their political rights. The ECHR initially ruled that Spain had not violated their rights. Recently, Sànchez and the others requested that the ECHR's Grand Chamber review the initial decision. However, the ECHR has now rejected this request for review, thus upholding its original ruling that Spain did not violate their political rights by ordering pre-trial detention. This decision is significant as it closes a legal avenue for Sànchez and the other plaintiffs in their challenge to the Spanish judicial system's handling of the 'procés'.
