José Jerí

José Jerí is the former interim president of Peru. He recently faced impeachment proceedings and was removed from office after serving only four months. Jerí's ouster stems from a corruption scandal dubbed "Chifagate," involving undisclosed meetings with a Chinese businessman, Zhihua Yang, who was under government scrutiny and held a concession for an energy project. Videos emerged showing Jerí meeting with Yang outside of his official schedule, leading to accusations of corruption and a lack of transparency. Jerí denied lying and claimed he was a victim of a smear campaign. Congress voted to impeach him by a significant margin, triggering further political instability in Peru, which has seen a rapid succession of presidents in recent years. His removal occurred just weeks before scheduled presidential and congressional elections.
