Matilde de la Torre

Matilde de la Torre was a prominent figure in early 20th-century Spain, known as a Republican politician, educator, and writer. She was one of the pioneering women who served as representatives in the Spanish Cortes during the 1930s, advocating for women's rights and modernization. De la Torre, along with other female contemporaries from educated backgrounds, played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of the Second Republic. She was forced into exile following the Spanish Civil War and died in Mexico. Recently, her remains were repatriated to her hometown of Cabezón de la Sal, Cantabria, eighty years after her death, fulfilling her wish to be buried in her homeland. This event highlights the ongoing effort to recognize and honor the contributions of Republican figures who were exiled or suppressed during the Franco regime, underscoring their lasting impact on Spanish history and the fight for democracy.
