Nurul Amin Shah Alam

Nurul Amin Shah Alam was a 56-year-old, nearly blind Rohingya refugee from Rakhine state in Myanmar. He is newsworthy due to the circumstances surrounding his death in Buffalo, New York. After being released from a county jail, he was taken into custody by US Border Patrol and then released at a Tim Hortons restaurant, miles away from his home. He went missing on February 19, 2026. His body was found dead on a downtown street in Buffalo. A medical examiner in New York has ruled his death a homicide, resulting from a "voluntary act of another person, which may include acts or omissions." The case has sparked outrage and raised questions about the treatment of vulnerable refugees by US authorities.
