Phil Haines

Phil Haines is the husband of Helen Haines, an independent Australian lawmaker representing the federal seat of Indi. He is newsworthy due to a recent, horrific incident involving his wife. On October 21, 2026, Helen Haines was the victim of a targeted car attack outside her electoral office in Wangaratta, Victoria. The attack resulted in severe injuries, necessitating the amputation of both her legs. Phil Haines confirmed the extent of her injuries, stating that despite the "horrendous incident," his wife's "heart and mind are in good shape" and expressed relief that she survived. The alleged attacker, Brendan Nugent, has been charged with multiple offenses. This event highlights a concerning rise in threats and violence against Australian legislators, a trend historically rare in the country. Helen Haines' current condition and recovery are of significant public interest, as is the broader issue of political safety in Australia.
