Ratko Mladic

Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military chief, has died in prison at the age of 84. Known as the "Butcher of Bosnia," Mladic was convicted of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity for his role in the 1992-1995 Bosnian War, most notably the Srebrenica massacre. He was serving a life sentence at the UN International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals in The Hague. Mladic had suffered several strokes in recent months leading up to his death. His conviction and sentence were upheld on appeal in June 2021, solidifying his status as a convicted war criminal responsible for widespread atrocities during the conflict.
