Sandel

Sandel is a researcher studying chimpanzee behavior in Uganda. He is newsworthy due to his observations and documentation of a significant shift in chimpanzee social dynamics, specifically the emergence of a 'civil war' between two groups of chimpanzees previously considered a cohesive unit. Sandel first noticed the polarization in June 2015, when the Western chimpanzees were chased by the Central group. This division escalated over the years, with the Western group males initiating patrol routes, prompting the Central group to do the same, leading to conflicts. The chimpanzees eventually separated into distinct territories and reproduced only within their respective groups. This research is significant as it provides insights into the complex social structures and potential drivers of conflict within chimpanzee communities.
