Santiago Ramón y Cajal

Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) was a Spanish neuroscientist and pathologist, renowned as one of the founders of modern neuroscience. He is best known for his neuron doctrine, which posited that the nervous system is composed of individual cells (neurons) rather than a continuous reticulum. He received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1906 for his work on the structure of the nervous system.
