Sharif Osman Hadi

Sharif Osman Hadi was a prominent Bangladeshi student leader and activist who was killed in December 2025, triggering widespread protests and unrest in Bangladesh. He was a leader of the 2024 student-led uprising and was also standing as a candidate in upcoming elections. Hadi was shot by a masked gunman and later died in a Singapore hospital from his injuries. His death sparked violent demonstrations, including the torching of buildings and vandalism of offices, notably the headquarters of The Daily Star newspaper. Tens of thousands attended his funeral. The situation has prompted a nationwide security response and is being referred to as the 'Hadi effect' as Bangladesh heads towards pivotal national elections. Recent arrests by Indian police in connection with his killing are seen as a potential step towards easing strained relations between India and Bangladesh.
