Umaro Sissoco Embalo

Umaro Sissoco Embalo is the former President of Guinea-Bissau. He was deposed in a military coup in late November 2025 following a disputed presidential election held on November 23rd. The coup occurred before the election results could be finalized, with the electoral commission reporting that armed men seized and destroyed ballots, tally sheets, computers, and servers storing the results. Major-General Horta Inta-a was sworn in as the new transitional president. Following the coup, Embalo initially sought refuge in Senegal before traveling to the Republic of Congo. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has dispatched a delegation to Guinea-Bissau to mediate with the military leaders. New elections are scheduled for December 6, 2026. The situation highlights political instability in Guinea-Bissau and the ongoing efforts to restore constitutional order.
