About

Umaro Sissoco Embalo is the former President of Guinea-Bissau. He was removed from power in a military coup in late November 2025, following a disputed presidential election held on November 23rd. The coup occurred before the election results could be finalized, with the electoral commission reporting that armed forces seized and destroyed election materials, including ballots and servers. Major-General Horta Inta-a was subsequently sworn in as the new transitional president. Following the coup, Embalo initially sought refuge in Senegal before traveling to Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has sent a delegation to Guinea-Bissau to mediate with the military leaders. New elections are scheduled for December 6, 2026.
