Umaro Sissoco Embalo

Umaro Sissoco Embalo is the former President of Guinea-Bissau. He was removed from power in a military coup in late November 2025, amidst a disputed presidential election. The coup occurred before the electoral commission could finalize the results, with the army seizing and destroying election materials. Following the coup, Embalo initially sought refuge in Senegal before traveling to Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has since sent a delegation to Guinea-Bissau to mediate with the new military leaders. The military government has announced new elections scheduled for December 6, 2026. The situation remains tense, with regional pressure mounting on the military leaders to restore constitutional order.
