William Klein is a former US diplomat with over two decades of experience in foreign service. He held senior roles at the United States’ embassy in Beijing from 2016 to 2021 and also worked at the American Institute in Taiwan and on the US State Department’s China desk in Washington. His diplomatic postings also included assignments in South Asia, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union. Currently, he is a consulting partner with FGS Global, based in their Berlin office.
Klein is newsworthy due to his extensive experience in US-China relations, providing insights into topics such as Trump-Xi summits and the potential for shifts in transatlantic relations in light of US-China rivalry. He recently commented on the unlikelihood of the Greenland crisis leading to a realignment of the EU with China, emphasizing the EU's focus on balancing relations with both the US and China. His expertise makes him a relevant commentator on current geopolitical dynamics.
