Path cleared for Everest climbers after huge ice block
Nepali mountaineers have successfully cleared a route past a large ice block on Mount Everest, ending a two-week blockage for climbers. Icefall doctors and expert sherpas have fixed ropes up to Camp 2, allowing climbers to resume their ascent after the spring season preparations fell behind schedule. The delay was caused by a 100-foot-high ice serac that needed to melt. While the route to Camp 1 and Camp 2 is now open, a major serac remains unstable, posing a risk for heavy loads. This year, 425 climbers have permits to summit the mountain, generating significant revenue for Nepal.
